Tottenham dealt massive blow in race for Premier League ‘legend’

At a glance:

  • Tottenham have verbal agreement with Andy Robertson
  • Scot’s Liverpool contract runs out this summer
  • Atletico Madrid join the race

Tottenham’s interest in Andy Robertson is well documented, but it appears as if there’s been a twist in the tale.

Roberto De Zerbi will look to add some experience to his squad this summer as they continue to battle relegation.

Tottenham have a verbal agreement to sign Robertson for free, but the deal hinges on Premier League safety.

And now, reports suggest Atletico Madrid have entered the race to secure his signature.

Atletico Madrid want Robertson

Robertson joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017 and has established himself as one of the best left-backs in Premier League history.

With his contract set to expire this summer, it has been confirmed that he will depart the club for free.

Tottenham have done whatever they can to convince the experienced Scot, but Atletico Madrid have now entered the race.

According to the Daily Record, Diego Simeone now wants to sign the left-back, with the La Liga giants also able to offer him UEFA Champions League football.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are fighting to save their Premier League status, so it remains to be seen if Robertson changes his mind.

The Spanish side also wanted to sign him last summer, so their interest is clearly long-standing.

In an interview with Sky Sports via Liverpool Echo, Thiago Alcantara referred to Robertson as a legend, with the defender set to leave Liverpool alongside Mohamed Salah in the summer.

He said: “They [Salah and Robertson] are legends of the club, they’re amazing football players.

“It doesn’t matter where they go, they will still be amazing football players.”

Not a huge loss for Tottenham

Robertson is an experienced figure and would provide healthy competition for Destiny Udogie and Souza.

De Zerbi could also use his experience, especially with Cristian Romero set to leave Tottenham.

However, at this stage of his career, it remains to be seen if he can keep up with the rigours of the Italian’s system.

Robertson has played a lot of football for Liverpool and Scotland over the years and is past his prime.

Tottenham need to sign young players to rejuvenate their squad, so as good a player as Robertson is, it won’t be a huge loss for them if he goes elsewhere.

Moreover, Udogie himself has struggled with injuries, so they are better off signing a top left-back instead of a backup.

That said, the verbal agreement is in place for a transfer if Tottenham avoid relegation. Atletico are yet to make an official offer, so we’ll have to wait and see how this one develops.
