Tottenham want ‘special’ Premier League striker ahead of Chelsea

At a glance:

  • Tottenham interested in Igor Thiago
  • Any move dependent on Premier League status
  • Chelsea also monitoring the striker

Tottenham Hotspur are highly keen on strengthening their squad across all areas in the summer transfer window.

Spurs have had an abysmal 2025-26 season, which sees them sit in the relegation zone with five games remaining. They need at least three wins in their remaining games to potentially save themselves. They have zero wins in the last 15.

However, if they are able to avoid the relegation zone, Tottenham appear to be working hard to strengthen their squad. They are looking for a major rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi and have identified Igor Thiago as a target.

Tottenham and Chelsea interested in Igor Thiago

Spurs are expected to send Randal Kolo Muani back to PSG after his loan spell ends this summer. Meanwhile, Richarlison and Dominic Solanke have been underwhelming during their time at the club.

Hence, as per TeamTALK, Tottenham are monitoring Thiago for a potential move. The Brentford striker has been exceptional this season, scoring 24 goals and providing one assist in 35 games across competitions.

He is the second-highest scorer in the Premier League this season with 21 goals, just three behind Erling Haaland.

Earlier this month, after Brentford’s 2-2 draw against Everton, Bees head coach Keith Andrews praised Thiago, saying (h/t The Independent):

“The biggest thing for Thiago this season was staying fit and playing as many minutes as he has. We always knew he had brilliant attributes.

“The goals get all the attention but his overall performance levels continue to get better and better and he’s constantly evolving his game. He’s proving to be a very, very special player.”

Thiago has helped Brentford climb to ninth place in the Premier League standings. Moreover, the Bees have Matviy Ponomarenko as a potential replacement for Thiago if he joins Tottenham or Chelsea this summer.

Tottenham need attacking reinforcements

While replacing Harry Kane is impossible, Spurs have failed to even build a squad that could compensate for his departure.

The likes of Solanke, Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert, and Brennan Johnson have largely been underwhelming at the club. They are very good players, but Tottenham need game changers.

This season, the north London side have scored just 42 goals in 33 Premier League games. For reference, they scored 64 goals in 38 games last season, despite going through an injury crisis and focusing on the Europa League.

They evidently need big attacking reinforcements.

Hence, Thiago could be a good signing for Tottenham. His contract with Brentford expires in 2031, and as per Transfermarkt, his market value is €50 million. Moreover, he is just 24, suggesting his peak years might be ahead of him.
