Tottenham Hotspur won the Europa League last season, but are now close to relegation from the Premier League.
This isn’t new for the north London side, whose owners have made some terrible decisions over the years.
They competed for the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino. However, after sacking him, instead of building on his work, they changed the strategy.
In an episode of Stick to Football earlier this year, Ange Postecoglou slammed the Tottenham owners for a lack of strategy and ambition.
He said that Spurs don’t act like a big club in the transfer market. Andre Villas-Boas has now backed that claim.
Villas-Boas hits out at Tottenham owners amidst their poor season
A series of poor decisions now sees Spurs in the Premier League relegation zone with five games remaining.
In an interview with Sky Sports, former Tottenham head coach Villas-Boas shared his thoughts on the situation. He wished them well and hoped they could avoid relegation.
The Porto President was then asked about Postecoglou’s comments about Spurs needing a culture change. He hit out at the club’s board in his answer, saying:
“Well, it’s difficult. I mean, culture goes from the top to the bottom. But it is the top that marks that culture normally. I think the principles and values of Tottenham were there in the beginning.
“And the way that they played football, and the way you should play the Tottenham way. It has been lost, of course, in the last few years. Also, usually some unpredictability in terms of results.”

He slammed the owners for not showing up when needed and pushing the managers out, saying:
“But, the management should be there all the time, and then I think it’s a difficult part, who represents the management, who is really the owner, where is the owner? Uh, and it’s always difficult to respond, you know, there’s always a voice from the top that should go above managers.
“And sometimes when you need those words of power, they are never there. And people tend to disappear in the worst scenarios. So, it’s a difficult situation, very difficult club.”
Villas-Boas was the head coach of Tottenham from July 2012 to December 2013 and had a decent PPM (Points per game) of 1.91 in 80 games.
Tottenham owners must sell
This isn’t the first time a former Tottenham employee has taken digs at the owners, and it won’t be the last.
Players, managers, and even the hierarchy have seen numerous changes over the years. However, the result remains the same, i.e., incompetence.
None of the managers under ENIC have received the right tools to play their style, except arguably Thomas Frank.
Mauricio Pochettino and Postecoglou were left hung out to dry, but did exceedingly well with what they had.
Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, meanwhile, have also consistently slammed the club.
Tottenham have won just two major trophies under ENIC, despite being one of the richest clubs in the world. There have been numerous failed transfers due to wage issues, which have consistently held Spurs back.
It has been over two decades, and there is no doubt that Tottenham cannot become a football giant under ENIC and the Lewis Family.
