Tottenham player criticised for ‘bad defending’ against Brighton – and it isn’t Kevin Danso

Georginio Rutter’s last-minute equaliser for Brighton will still be fresh on the minds of the Tottenham players.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side produced a spirited showing against the Seagulls but only came away with a point as they shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Kaoru Mitoma cancelled out Pedro Porro’s opener in the first half, before Xavi Simons gave Tottenham the lead again with a stunning strike.

However, late in the game, Rutter equalised from close range after Kevin Danso failed to clear the ball.

The Swiss international took most of the blame, but Simon Jordan believes Pedro Porro didn’t cover himself in too much glory during that passage of play.

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro slammed

Michael Dawson accused Danso of switching off as he took a needless touch before losing the ball to Jan Paul van Hecke, who teed up Rutter.

Jordan, however, feels it was actually Porro who should shoulder the blame. The full-back wasn’t quick to sniff out Yankuba Minteh’s threat, who passed the ball into the area that caused the problem in the first place.

“They were much better against Brighton, who have been in very good nick,” said Jordan on talkSPORT.

“Most people would have picked Brighton to pass Spurs off the field. Spurs must be looking at themselves, thinking about how we managed to lose this game.

“It was bad defending in the end from Pedro Porro, which created the outcome. Albeit, you’ll hear a lot of noise from him about how the team should play and how the fans should support him.”

Silly to blame Porro

Looking at that passage of play again, it’s hard to see what Porro did wrong. It’s always easier to pinpoint such things in hindsight, but as much as it hurts to say it, Danso was the culprit there.

He should never have taken a touch there as Tottenham were three minutes away from sealing a critical win. In fact, he should have tried to boot the ball out of the stadium as that would have allowed the players a little bit more time to regroup.

Jordan’s comments are a bit salty, to say the least. But Tottenham have no time to dwell on such things as they prepare for a must-win game against Wolves.

And after West Ham United picked up a point against Crystal Palace yesterday, anything less than three points will take them as close to relegation as they’ve ever been in the Premier League era.
