Tottenham remain in the relegation zone as Brighton scored a last-gasp equaliser to secure a 2-2 Premier League draw in North London.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side gave a good account of themselves and took the lead through Pedro Porro, although Kaoru Mitoma equalised at the stroke of halftime.
It was a well-fought contest – particularly in the second half – as Tottenham continued to grow into the game.
And Xavi Simons appeared to win the game for his side with a late stunner, only for Georginio Rutter to score from close range in the fifth minute of added time, much to Tottenham’s anguish.
Kevin Danso played a big part in Brighton’s equaliser as they surrendered two points in typical Tottenham fashion. And Michael Dawson feels the Swiss international’s error could prove to be incredibly costly.
Dawson calls out Danso
Starting at the heart of the backline alongside Micky van de Ven in Cristian Romero’s absence, Danso actually had a good game until the closing stages.
He failed to clear a routine ball and gave it away to Jan Pal van Hecke, who played in Rutter for a close-range finish.

Dawson feels that Danso’s costly mistake, which led to a draw, could be pivotal in the relegation battle, as Tottenham could be four points below West Ham United if they win against Crystal Palace.
“They have to take the positives, but it will feel like a loss,” began Dawson on Sky Sports.
“When you take the lead at home twice, even the position Spurs are in with no wins in 15, I thought when they went 2-1 up, ‘this is a chance to turn your fortunes around and climb out of the bottom three. Go ahead of West Ham, put the pressure on them.’
“And then one mistake from Danso, who switches off in the final moment of the game, you are a centre half, you clear your lines, you do everything to make sure we get out of here with a win this football match.
“And this will feel like a huge two points dropped.”
Dawson says Tottenham will be ‘devastated’
Tottenham were three minutes away from getting their first Premier League win of 2026 to climb out of the relegation zone before Brighton delivered a suckerpunch.
And Dawson feels the result will feel like a defeat due to the circumstances of the Seagulls’ late goal.

“It is a massive disappointment, not just because they did not win the game – the way they played,” continued Dawson on Sky.
“There were plenty of positives – but to take the lead twice and then gift Brighton the two goals, so avoidable from Spurs’ point of view, but take nothing away from Brighton.”
“From Spurs’ point of view, devastated at how they conceded those goals.”
Tottenham are now just a point below West Ham, who travel to Selhurst Park on Monday for a crucial Premier League clash. And if the Hammers secure all three points, the possibility of relegation will loom large at N17.
It’s not looking good for Tottenham; that much is very clear.
