Tottenham suffered a double whammy against Sunderland as it turned out to be another catastrophic night for them in the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge of the club ended in a bitter defeat at the Stadium of Light as they slipped further into the relegation zone.
To make matters worse, a teary-eyed Cristian Romero limped off in the second half with a suspected knee problem.
After the game, De Zerbi allayed fears of a long-term injury for Romero. However, it has been widely reported that he is likely to miss the rest of the season, with one eye on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
And now, Argentina assistant manager Robert Ayala has effectively confirmed that the 28-year-old will not play for Tottenham this season.
Massive Romero blow for Tottenham
Romero was involved in a nasty collision with Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. And while the Czech goalkeeper got back on his feet to stay on the pitch for the rest of the game, the Argentine had to be withdrawn, with Kevin Danso replacing him.
Reports from Argentina confirmed Romero would miss up to 5-8 weeks of action, which would rule him out for Tottenham’s run-in.
And in the wake of recent events, Ayala has provided an update on his condition, suggesting that Romero will only return to action in and around the World Cup.
“We think Cristian Romero will be able to make it just in time for the World Cup, said Ayala to Fox Sports via Mundo Albieceleste.
“Maybe without as much match rhythm, since he won’t have the minutes he’s had so far. He’ll train and might even arrive in slightly better physical condition. The timeline works out, so in that sense, we’re calm.
“Obviously, this doesn’t stop us from continuing to look at other options, too.”
Romero’s Tottenham career essentially over
Romero has been linked with a Tottenham departure in the summer and also has a release clause in his contract.
He is likely to move on whether or not the Lilywhites avoid relegation. And now, due to his latest injury setback, it appears as if he has already played his last game for the club unless he returns ahead of schedule.
The 28-year-old has endured a tough season, but it goes without saying that he has played a big role for the club in recent years.
Romero was the Player of the Match in the UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United and was also named Player of the Tournament as Tottenham finally broke their trophy drought.
He’s had his issues with red cards and fallouts with the club’s hierarchy. However, he always wore his heart on his sleeve when he played for Tottenham and will be remembered for his contributions.
We’re not ready to say goodbye yet, as there are bigger fish to fry at the moment in terms of the relegation battle. But for now, get well soon, Cuti.
