Tottenham announced Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach earlier this week. He is expected to take charge of training on Friday, April 3.
However, there has been no update on his coaching staff yet. Notably, Tottenham didn’t mention the exits of Bruno Saltor, Andreas Georgson, Cameron Campbell, and Fabian Otte when they mutually parted ways with Igor Tudor.
Saltor has been in charge of training in the days between Tudor’s departure and De Zerbi’s arrival.
There has been plenty of speculation about potential additions to the Italian’s coaching staff. Legendary defender Alessandro Nesta and former Spurs midfielder Sandro have been linked with joining the club.
Alessandro Nesta will not be joining De Zerbi’s team at Tottenham
Tottenham have evidently had major defensive issues in the last two seasons. While it was mainly due to injuries last season, they have also leaked goals in the ongoing campaign.
Hence, an iconic defender like Alessandro Nesta would have been a welcome addition at the club. Tuttosport reported that De Zerbi had made contact with his compatriot to bring him to Spurs. However, Tom Barclay has confirmed that the AC Milan legend will not be joining the former Brighton manager.
Nesta made his name after his decade-long stint with AC Milan, forming a formidable partnership with Paolo Maldini. He won two UEFA Champions League trophies and two Serie A titles with them. He also won the FIFA World Cup with Italy in 2006.
Tottenham, however, will not make a move to secure Nesta’s services. On the other hand, Sandro has hinted at joining De Zerbi’s coaching staff. The pair worked together at Benevento, and the Brazilian has also hailed him as the best coach he’s played under.
Who could join De Zerbi’s staff at Tottenham?
While Sandro is one name speculated to join De Zerbi, talkSPORT has reported that Saltor might stay at the club as well. The Italian also has a group of seven people he’s worked with at many of his previous clubs:
- Andrea Maldera
- Enrico Ventrulli
- Ricard Segarra
- Marcattilio Marcattilii
- Vincenzo Teresa
- Agostino Tibaudi
- Marcello Quinto
Some of these names are likely to join De Zerbi at Tottenham, if not all.
Overall, Tottenham need a proper alignment between the coaching staff and the players. There was evidence of a rift between the players and Thomas Frank earlier this season. A similar relationship this time around could lead Spurs to relegation, with just seven games remaining.
