Five players Tottenham must sell this summer in transfer overhaul
  • Micky van de Ven among players Tottenham should let go
  • Spurs will need a complete overhaul of their defence
  • James Maddison also makes this list

Tottenham Hotspur will have to make some tough calls in the summer regardless of where they finish this season. The club are walking on thin ice and run the risk of relegation.

The current state of Tottenham isn’t something anyone expected. While the club clearly has no shortage of quality players, there seems to be a lack of fighting spirit in some of them.

So, a decision regarding letting go of underperforming individuals who have failed to impress this campaign will have to be undertaken sooner or later.

Below is a list of five players who must be sold by Tottenham to create space and bring in reinforcements moving forward.

Cristian Romero

Romero has established himself as a key part of Tottenham’s defence. He first arrived at the club on loan in 2021 before making his stay permanent a year later. The Argentine centre-back has already played as many as 155 games for Spurs.

However, his recent displays have been inconsistent and not up to the standards needed at Tottenham. So, although the 27-year-old has a contract with the club till 2029, perhaps it’s best to part ways with him in the upcoming summer.

There have already been reports linking him to various clubs in Europe, including Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United, among others. Spurs should accept suitable offers for Romero to generate cash inflow that could be used to bolster multiple areas in their squad.

Guglielmo Vicario

Vicario has been at the club since 2023. In this campaign, he has made 43 appearances in all competitions and is naturally the primary goalkeeper for Spurs. However, that might soon change owing to a dip in form.

The Italian international has recently made some costly mistakes that have resulted in losses for the club in crucial matches. Tottenham will have to bring in someone new to guard their goal if they sell Vicario, as Antonin Kinsky needs to develop further before being handed the number one role.

Micky Van de Ven

Another regular in Tottenham’s backline unfortunately makes this list. The Dutch defender has made 38 appearances this season for Spurs across all competitions, along with scoring seven goals.

There’s little doubt about the potential Van de Ven possesses, but the Lilywhites are at a crucial juncture where results are all that matter, and the 24-year-old centre-back hasn’t been able to make a strong case for himself by leaving enough on the pitch.

Moreover, Tottenham could raise a significant amount of funds due to Van de Ven’s high valuation, which would help them rebuild their team.

James Maddison

Maddison has missed every Tottenham match this season due to an ACL tear. The absence of the English international, who played 45 matches last season, has certainly had an impact on the team.

That said, Tottenham already signed reinforcements for the attacking midfield position last summer. Xavi Simons seems to have managed to fill Maddison’s shoes in the squad already.

Coupled with the fact that Mohammed Kudus can also operate in the number 10 role, Maddison might find it difficult to break through into the starting XI moving forward.

So, a move away for the 29-year-old in search of more regular playing time could be the way to go. Additionally, he certainly isn’t getting any younger, and given his recent injury history, it would be wise for Tottenham to cash in while there’s still time.

Radu Dragusin

Dragusin has found it difficult to find minutes this season, having started just six matches out of his nine appearances so far in all competitions. The young centre-back, who can also operate at right-back, is often criticised for his lack of ball-playing ability, which is a necessity these days due to high-pressing football.

Tottenham will need to rebuild their defence from scratch by the looks of it, as the majority of their current players are not performing at their best. The results are already clear, with the club losing four of their last five league matches.

All things considered, there are still a few games left this season. It will be interesting to see if any of the above-mentioned names can turn things around and impress with their performances.
