Was Tottenham’s transfer window a success or a failure?

Tottenham Hotspur have been fairly busy in the summer transfer window, bringing in 5 new arrivals to bolster the squad with their eyes firmly set on a Champions league spot. Was Tottenham’s window a success or a failure?

Kieran Trippier- 7/10

Some people don’t appreciate the importance of the signing of Kieran Trippier. He arrived in the summer from recently relegated Burnley for just £3.5 million. As Kyle Walker has been in poor form since returning back from surgery, Kieran will allow Kyle to compete and fight for his place, which will hopefully eradicate some of the sloppy and clumsy defending which was on show at some points last season.  This could be a new and improved Kyle Walker that we see, as you could see the transformation with Danny Rose when Welsh international Ben Davies arrived and you could argue Rose was our best defender last year. Trippier was highly rated from last year during his season with Burnley in the Premier League and was one of their more consistent performers.

Kevin Wimmer- 7/10

Tottenham and Daniel Levy looked to do some of their business very early, as Mauricio Pochettino identified the defence as an area to improve as the summer transfer window came around. Kevin Wimmer is a young Austrian international who was playing for German side Koln and was the heart of their defence. We all know Pochetino has faith in his young players as its part of his ‘philosophy’ and you can see it again here. As Kevin featured regularly in pre-season and he looked very solid defensively. During the start of this season we have not seen any of Wimmer surprisingly as I thought he impressed a lot in pre-season, however we are likely to see more of him as the games mount up for Spurs as the season progresses.

Toby Alderweireld- 8/10

If there was one deal that seemed to drag on this summer, it was this one. However, it was well worth the wait as he has been partnered with Jan Vertonghen, with whom he played alongside during his early days at Ajax. Toby cost around £11-13 million and may be the key to our defence, as the chemistry with him and Jan Vertonghen looks like it will lead to an incredibly strong duo being formed at the back for Spurs. In the game against Manchester United on the first day of the season, he looked like one of our most creative players on the pitch, which is quite shocking and encouraging. If he can replicate his Southampton form at Tottenham, then Tottenham will be on to a winner.

Clinton N’jie- 7.5/10

Tottenham signed the Cameroon forward from Lyon for £13 million, as many fans noticed we lack pace on the wings with Andros injured and therefore, we probably couldn’t ask for a more suited player due to Aaron Lennon going to Everton. I am not saying he will be as good as Lennon as he was incredible at times, but this is very good business from Levy. He played well up front with former team-mates Alexandre Lacazette and Nabil Fekir which resulted in Lyon having a very good attacking dynamic trio last season. He is very young and can see him doing incredibly well for Spurs.

Heung-Min Son- 8.5/10

Undoubtedly the most exciting transfer we have had this window, a very exciting player in Son as he is very quick and can score from range, we lack his qualities still from the Bale departure, as we all know Erik Lamela has failed to impress. Heung-Min Son is a goal scoring midfielder, he was one the highest scoring midfielders in the Bundesliga since 2012, outscoring world class players such as Arjen Robben, which is outstanding. He can also do a shift up front like Clinton, so if Kane gets injured we have some talent that can do the job up top.

Departures

One of the best things about this window is getting rid of the dead wood in our squad, such as Chiriches and Holtby etc. who were not in the main plan for us let’s be honest. But the worrying thing was is we didn’t replace these players and now we lack depth in the defensive midfielder role, resorting to playing Eric Dier there. Who really surprised me against Everton with an outstanding MOTM performance.

Even though this window has had its ups and downs, I genuinely think it has been a success as players like Nabil Bentaleb and Alex Pritchard signed new contracts, committing their future at the club.

And let’s not forget Dele Alli, who finally joined the club after agreeing to join the club beforehand but he spent last season on loan at MK Dons.
