Following Tottenham and French captain, Hugo Lloris picking up a wrist injury during pre-season, Mauricio Pochettino has been left with a tough choice ahead of Spurs’ opener against Manchester United on the 8th August.
Pochettino has to find a second goalkeeper at White Hart Lane as Michel Vorm is set to stand in between the sticks during Tottenham’s clash with Manchester United.
With Brad Friedel retiring from professional football, Spurs go into the clash with just one fit professional goalkeeper.
Vorm is an obvious choice to take the number one spot during the first few games of the season during Lloris’ absence but I’ve taken a look at the current options in the Spurs ranks who may take the vacant spot on the bench, followed by a few who Pochettino may bring in.
Luke McGee
Luke McGee was a regular for Spurs during their Barclays Under-21 Premier League 2014-15 campaign. The young keeper has also trained with the club’s senior stoppers, making his senior debut against Chicago Fire during a 2014 tour of Canada and USA.
McGee is yet to make his Premier League debut but he has previously been on the bench for Spurs during a Europa League fixture against Greek side Asteras Tripolis. The former England U17 is the favourite to take the number two spot against Manchester United.
Harry Voss
Harry Voss is unlikely to make the bench as Pochettino looks for back up goalkeeper. Voss is currently seen as the second keeper in the Tottenham Development Squad and with no senior training to his name, this would be a big step up for the 18 year old. The Englishman suffered from injury during the first half of the 2013/14 season but came back bigger and better, making a total of ten starts.
Voss will most likely be loaned out this season in order to develop as a player, allowing him to break into the U21 squad in the near future.
Timo Horn
Spurs have been linked with 1. FC Köln goalkeeper Timo Horn for a number of months now and with Lloris both possibly on his way to United and currently injured, a move could be made for the German keeper sooner than later.
Horn, 22, is under contract at the Bundesliga club until the summer of 2019 and is a German Under-21. He made 33 appearances during the 2014/15 season. Having already made 100 appearances for Köln at the age of 22, Horn certainly has a bright future ahead.
Gerhard Tremmel
Gerhard Tremmel may have only been seen as a second choice during his four year spell at Swansea but in 2012 following an injury to Michel Vorm, Tremmel got his first chance of first team action. The German keeper went on to take part in a seven-match unbeaten run. This run included wins against Liverpool in the League Cup and Arsenal in the Premier League. Tremmel got a number of clean sheets against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal during this time. At the end of the 2014/15 season he was released on a free transfer. Tremmel would be a great third choice keeper for Spurs if they managed to bring him in for free. Tremmel would possibly work in a similar way to that of Friedel during his time at the club as a player. This would include working with any young keepers coming through the ranks and making the odd cup appearance.
