Lucas Bergvall Addresses Tottenham Release Clause After Contract Extension
Lucas Bergvall has refused to confirm or deny whether his new Tottenham Hotspur contract contains a release clause, just days after putting pen to paper on a long-term extension.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, the midfielder was pressed directly on the Lucas Bergvall contract release clause speculation that followed his eventful summer, and gave a pointed non-answer.
“Is that what you want to hear? That’s not something I’m going to say,” Bergvall said when asked about the clause, speaking to football.london. The response leaves the question open, and there is no confirmation from the club or player that such a clause exists.
Swedish Midfielder Confirms New Contract Deal Following Summer Transfer Interest
Bergvall signed his new long-term deal at Tottenham earlier in September 2026, ending months of speculation about his future. The extension arrived after a summer in which both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United lodged bids for the 20-year-old, a period Spurs have already addressed in our rejection of summer interest.
“Incredibly happy to have signed a new contract. There was a lot of speculation this summer. I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club, and I’m incredibly happy to have signed a new deal,” Bergvall said.
Asked how he handled the uncertainty while talks played out, he added:
“I let time do the talking. I didn’t try to force anything, just tried to be happy.”
Roberto De Zerbi Role and Squad Impact After Frustrating 2025/26 Campaign
The contract talk followed a difficult year for Bergvall, who was previously vocal about a lack of minutes in his favoured position during the 2025/26 season, detailed in our earlier report. That uncertainty made his commitment to Tottenham far from guaranteed.
“Last year was tough, and that was reflected quite a bit in how things went,” Bergvall said, looking back on the campaign.
Roberto De Zerbi has since handed him regular game time at the start of the new campaign, a shift widely seen as central to persuading the midfielder to stay and commit his future to the club.
Bergvall Targets Team Success as Tottenham Continue New Season Push
Bergvall was clear about why he wanted to extend his stay in north London despite interest elsewhere.
“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club, and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” he said.
He also set out personal ambitions for the season ahead.
“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.”
On his individual targets, he added: “Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team, performances, goals and assists, to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”
Those words carry extra weight after Tottenham’s recent defeat against Aston Villa, with De Zerbi’s squad needing contributions from players like Bergvall as the new season builds momentum.
