It’s safe to say Tottenham Hotspur could use a player like Rafael van der Vaart at the moment as they struggle for form and consistency.
The Dutch international secured cult hero status at N17 during his short stint with the club, taking the Lilywhites by storm with his goals and individual brilliance.
Under Roberto De Zerbi this season, Tottenham have flattered to deceive despite splashing the cash on ten new signings.
And now, Van der Vaart has delivered a grim verdict on his former team, admitting that they are awful to watch.
Rafael van der Vaart delivers grim Tottenham verdict
“They’ve certainly messed up the market a bit,” said the Dutchman via the Talking on the Rondo podcast.
“Players we don’t even know get sold there, and you’re already looking at a price tag of 40 or 50 million.
“That leaves clubs like Ajax, PSV, or Feyenoord thinking: ‘What are we supposed to do?’” regarding the overall available talent pool.
“I can’t even bear to watch them anymore. I find Tottenham truly awful to watch. When you spend that much money on those players. I find it truly incredible. Truly incredible.”
To be fair to Tottenham, they haven’t really been awful to watch and have improved progressively since the start of the season despite results not going their way.
Against Liverpool, they actually fared quite well and had a couple of glorious chances to take the lead at Anfield but fluffed their lines in front of goal.
We can understand Van der Vaart’s criticism as he loves the club, but we also believe De Zerbi deserves a little bit more time before a definitive verdict is passed on the current Tottenham team.
