It wasn’t a happy outing for Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford as they were comfortably beaten 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
It was a toothless performance from Roberto De Zerbi’s side as they suffered a sobering defeat that brought them crashing back to earth.
The Italian, however, named a starting XI that is hardly Tottenham’s strongest as a handful of key players remain injured or weeks away from full fitness.
James Maddison was one such player who was on the bench as he came on late in the game to make an impact.
And now, Mike McGrath has delivered an injury update on the England international.
Fresh James Maddison injury blow for Tottenham
Maddison only made a handful of appearances during the back end of last season for Tottenham after suffering an ACL injury.
He also missed the entirety of pre-season, which was a worrying sign for the Lilywhites.
However, Maddison trained ahead of the new season and was in the matchday squad vs Brentford as he came on as a second-half substitute.
Upon coming on, he suffered an awkward fall late in the game, but not much was made of it at the time.
And now, McGrath reports that he will undergo checks to get the all-clear as he faces a race against time to be fit to face Newcastle United next week.
He wrote on X: “James Maddison needed checks on a knock sustained in Tottenham’s defeat to Brentford.
“The 29-year-old fell awkwardly on his shoulder after coming on as he stepped up his comeback. Hopes he’ll be involved at the weekend vs NUFC.”
Judging by McGrath’s reporting, Maddison will not be risked for the EFL Cup second-round clash against Charlton Athletic.
Instead, Tottenham will wait for the gifted midfielder to work his way back up to full fitness so that he can feature against Matthias Jaissle’s side on Saturday.
