Tottenham Hotspur fell to a damaging 3-0 defeat against Brentford in what was a sobering result for Roberto De Zerbi and co.
There were a lot of expectations going into the game as the Lilywhites have splashed the cash in the summer transfer window and remain in talks to add to their squad.
Brentford dominated the game and secured a deserved win at home courtesy of goals from Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt and Michael Kayode.
Their second goal from Janelt emerged as a big talking point as two Tottenham players left a lot to be desired in that passage of play: Antonin Kinsky and Lucas Bergvall.
And De Zerbi feels the Swede could have done better in that situation, although he refused to pin the blame on him.
De Zerbi tips Lucas Bergvall to improve for Tottenham
After Richarlison received a rather poor pass from Kinsky, he found Bergvall next to him, who lost the ball and made a half-hearted attempt to win it back.
Moments later, Janelt had the ball into the back of the net and Tottenham went 2-0 down as they were staring down the barrel before half-time.
De Zerbi feels Bergvall’s lack of experience showed in that passage of play.
“Lucas Bergvall, the second goal,” began the Italian in his post-match press conference.
“I think he didn’t play bad today, even if I substituted in the half-time. But Lucas Bergvall in the next two years, he will not lose that ball in that moment of the game. But there are steps to become better.”
Bergvall was substituted at half-time, but Tottenham didn’t get any better as they were well beaten away from home.
