Roberto De Zerbi explains why he made Micky van de Ven Tottenham captain

Roberto De Zerbi confirmed earlier today that Micky van de Ven is Tottenham Hotspur’s new captain.

After Cristian Romero’s departure, the Dutchman was among the favourites to get the armband along with James Maddison and Pedro Porro.

And after he committed his future to the club with a long-term contract, Van de Ven was rewarded for his loyalty, performances and role within the squad by being named captain.

And De Zerbi has revealed why the Dutchman got the nod ahead of players who have been at Tottenham for longer.

De Zerbi says Van de Ven can improve at Tottenham

Van de Ven wore the armband a handful of times last season when Romero was injured or suspended.

“I think he needs to feel more responsibility than last season, because I think it shows not all his potential as a player,” said De Zerbi.

“He’s a top guy, but he’s closed as a guy, and I think giving more responsibilities to elect him as captain, I think is in the middle to become top top top or to stay the big player he has been last season.”

Porro, James Maddison, Ben Davies and Archie Gray are the other captains at the club, while Andy Robertson is also present as a senior player who can add some valuable input due to his exploits with Liverpool and Scotland.
