James Maddison is set to be named Tottenham Hotspur’s new captain ahead of the 2026/27 season. The England midfielder will reportedly inherit the armband as Roberto De Zerbi reshapes the leadership structure within his squad.
The development was reported by SZY, although Tottenham have not yet made an official announcement.
Maddison has been part of the club’s leadership group since arriving from Leicester City in 2023. He initially served as vice-captain alongside Cristian Romero under Ange Postecoglou.
Romero later replaced Son Heung-min as captain before the 2025/26 campaign. However, the Argentina defender’s future has become uncertain during De Zerbi’s summer rebuild, with several clubs monitoring his situation.
Tottenham captain decision rewards Maddison’s influence
Maddison has regularly worn the armband when Tottenham’s senior captains have been unavailable. His communication, experience and standing inside the dressing room make him an understandable choice.
The 29-year-old also publicly supported De Zerbi after the Italian helped Spurs avoid relegation last season. Maddison praised the head coach’s preparation and the confidence he restored following his arrival.
There will still be questions surrounding Maddison’s availability. He missed the opening pre-season victory over MK Dons after spending part of last season recovering from a serious knee injury.
Nevertheless, ReadTottenham previously assessed Maddison among the leading candidates to replace Romero. Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro were also possible options.
Choosing Maddison would give De Zerbi an experienced captain who understands the club and already holds influence among the squad. Tottenham supporters must now await formal confirmation from the club.
