Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to sell highly rated academy winger Tynan Thompson to Manchester United in a deal worth up to £8m.
The 18-year-old has officially left Spurs after progressing through the club’s youth system and reaching Roberto De Zerbi’s senior matchday squad three times last season.
According to Standard Sport, United will pay £4m immediately, with a further £4m available through performance-related add-ons.
Tottenham have also reportedly secured matching rights and a 20% sell-on clause. Neither club disclosed the financial terms when announcing the transfer.
Thompson requested the move because of personal family circumstances and wanted to relocate away from London. His departure was therefore not driven solely by Tottenham’s assessment of his footballing potential.
Spurs protect future value in Thompson deal
Thompson remained one of the leading prospects at Hotspur Way after signing his first professional contract in May 2025.
He scored 13 goals and supplied six assists across Tottenham’s youth teams last season. Seven of those goals arrived in seven UEFA Youth League appearances.
The winger also featured on the bench for first-team fixtures against Doncaster Rovers, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund without making his senior debut.
Tottenham’s clauses provide protection if Thompson develops into a valuable first-team player at Old Trafford. Matching rights could give Spurs an opportunity to bring him back, while the sell-on clause would provide income from a future transfer.
His exit follows Elijah Upson’s move to Arsenal after the defender rejected a new contract. ReadTottenham recently examined how Spurs lost another highly rated academy prospect to their north London rivals.
Tottenham will still be disappointed to lose Thompson, but the reported package represents a significant return for a player without a senior appearance.
The move also respects the winger’s personal circumstances while allowing Spurs to retain a financial interest in his development.
