Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly leading the race for Andreas Schjelderup as Benfica consider the Norway international’s future.
Spurs are preparing an opening proposal worth around €40m, including bonuses, following Schjelderup’s impressive performances at the World Cup.
However, Benfica are expected to demand €50m before agreeing to sell the 22-year-old.
The Portuguese club initially valued Schjelderup at approximately €40m, but his displays for Norway have strengthened their negotiating position.
Tottenham are now expected to decide whether to bridge the €10m gap and move ahead of rival clubs from England and Italy.
Football Insider reports that Spurs plan to open talks with Benfica rather than activate the winger’s considerably higher release clause.
Schjelderup fits De Zerbi’s attacking rebuild
Schjelderup scored 10 goals and supplied seven assists in 43 club appearances last season.
He then registered one goal and three assists at the World Cup as Norway reached the quarter-finals. Those performances increased interest in a player who can operate from the left or through central attacking areas.
Benfica want Schjelderup to sign a new long-term contract, with his current agreement running until 2028.
However, the winger has not accepted the proposal and is reportedly open to joining a club in a leading European league.
Tottenham need another wide attacker despite continuing negotiations with Manchester City for Savinho.

Tottenham’s reported position at the front of the race now needs to be followed by an offer capable of convincing Benfica.
