Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that legendary former captain Gary Mabbutt is recovering well after suffering a leg injury during a fall in South Africa.
The 64-year-old required hospital treatment following the accident while on holiday earlier this week.
Former Spurs midfielder Micky Hazard had revealed that Mabbutt was receiving treatment for a blood clot in his calf and could not immediately fly back to England.
Tottenham have now provided an encouraging update on their club ambassador’s condition.
In an official statement, Spurs said Mabbutt was resting at his family’s home in Johannesburg while waiting for medical clearance to return to the UK.
Mabbutt resumes calls to Tottenham supporters
Despite his injury, Mabbutt has already resumed making his daily birthday calls to elderly Tottenham supporters.
The former defender began regularly contacting older fans during the Covid lockdown and has continued the gesture through his role as a club ambassador.
Tottenham described his decision to restart the calls while recovering as “incredible”.
Mabbutt also thanked supporters around the world for the messages and well wishes he has received since news of the accident emerged.
The former England international spent 16 years with Tottenham between 1982 and 1998. He captained the club for more than a decade and lifted the FA Cup in 1991.
Mabbutt made 611 appearances in all competitions, placing him second on Spurs’ all-time list behind Steve Perryman.
Read Tottenham previously ranked Mabbutt among the club’s leading appearance-makers, highlighting his leadership and remarkable longevity in north London.
He remains in South Africa as he continues his recovery, with his return dependent on receiving clearance to fly.
