Tottenham Hotspur have contacted the representatives of Mainz midfielder Kaishu Sano following his impressive performances for Japan at the World Cup.
The 25-year-old has emerged as a possible option as Roberto De Zerbi continues to reshape his midfield despite the expensive arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund have all registered an interest in Sano. Liverpool currently lead the pursuit after holding talks over a possible deal.
The Reds are reportedly prepared to offer up to €60m, around £51m, to convince Mainz to sell. No Tottenham bid or direct negotiations with the German club have been reported.
Sano interest raises fresh Tottenham midfield question
Sano strengthened his reputation during Japan’s World Cup campaign. He scored the opening goal as his country came close to eliminating Brazil in the round of 32 before losing 2-1 to a stoppage-time Gabriel Martinelli strike.
The defensive midfielder had already impressed for Mainz, recording two goals and five assists across 48 appearances last season. His energy, ball-winning ability and composure under pressure could suit De Zerbi’s demanding midfield system.
Tottenham’s interest comes as Lucas Bergvall considers leaving in search of regular football. The Sweden international’s concerns were detailed when Read Tottenham examined his request for more first-team opportunities.
Pape Matar Sarr’s future is also uncertain, while Spurs released Yves Bissouma and declined to sign João Palhinha permanently.
Any Sano move could further restrict Archie Gray, who received only 102 minutes across De Zerbi’s final seven matches last season.
Liverpool remain ahead, but Tottenham’s contact suggests another major midfield addition is being considered.
