Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, with Roberto De Zerbi identifying the Italy international as a leading target for his rebuild.
That is according to a fresh update from Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, which says Spurs are targeting Tonali as they look to add a midfielder capable of dictating play.
The report states Tonali is contracted at Newcastle until 2029, has no release clause, and would only be considered for sale for a huge fee. Newcastle are said not to want to lose him, making any Tottenham move difficult even before negotiations begin.
Why Tonali Would Fit De Zerbi’s Tottenham Plan
Tonali’s appeal is obvious for a Spurs side being reshaped around De Zerbi’s technical demands. Tottenham have already moved aggressively this summer, with Sky also reporting deals for Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.
For supporters, the key point is not simply that Spurs like Tonali. It is that De Zerbi appears to want a midfield controller at the centre of the rebuild, and Tonali would represent an ambitious statement if Tottenham can persuade Newcastle to sell.
At this stage, though, the story remains interest rather than an advanced deal. Newcastle’s strong contractual position means Tottenham would likely need a major bid before this becomes anything more concrete.
