- Cristian Romero travelled to Argentina earlier this week
- Tottenham captain was slated for his behaviour amid relegation battle
- Romero now back in England to support Spurs vs Everton
Cristian Romero’s name has been dominating the headlines in recent weeks, once again for the wrong reasons.
Argentine journalist Gaston Edul has now provided an update on his situation after his mini-trip to his homeland earlier this week.
Romero was spotted at boyhood club Belgrano’s home ground, where he was supposedly training to get fit for Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
And now, it appears as if he has jetted back to Tottenham ahead of their all-important clash against Everton.
Romero back in Tottenham for relegation decider
Romero came under a lot of criticism for ditching Tottenham and instead opting to go back to his former club, while his current colleagues struggle to secure Premier League safety.
He picked up an MCL injury in the 1-0 defeat to Sunderland and hasn’t featured since.
De Zerbi defended Romero’s actions, claiming that he went back to Argentina only after approval from the decision makers at Tottenham.
And now, Edul claims that he is back in Tottenham as they prepare to take on Everton later today.
Romero is obviously not fit enough to play and won’t be in the matchday squad.
However, it remains to be seen if he’s spotted at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where he can support his players on arguably the biggest night of their careers.
Romero’s Tottenham career surely over
Romero has been linked with a Tottenham departure this summer. After everything that’s happened this season, it makes sense for all parties involved.
The Argentine is a top defender on his way, but too much has happened off the pitch for him to win over the fans.
Granted, he left to train with Belgrano after consulting with Tottenham. But ditching your club ahead of their most important game of the season isn’t going to sit well with the fans, regardless of how you spin the narrative.
Despite everything that’s happened, Romero has been a key player for the club over the years and played a big role in the UEFA Europa League win last year.
And if he’s spotted at the ground today, let’s hope Tottenham get a positive result to remain in the Premier League, as that will at least allow him to bow out on a high, if he’s leaving.
