Tottenham are preparing for a summer of change in the upcoming transfer window under Roberto De Zerbi.

And speaking exclusively to Read Tottenham, Sebastian Bassong sheds light on what the North London outfit need to make themselves a force to be reckoned with again.

Spurs have a handful of issues to address and have struggled massively with injuries in recent seasons.

Due to two underwhelming Premier League campaigns, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see some of their big hitters leaving.

That said, Bassong feels the former Brighton boss can make use of his contacts in footballing circles to make a handful of useful signings.

Bassong discusses Tottenham’s transfer plans

Tottenham have a verbal agreement to sign Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, although both deals hinge on whether or not they remain in the Premier League.

With just two games left for the season to finish, the Lilywhites are two points clear of the relegation zone as they prepare to take on Chelsea on Monday night.

Tottenham’s transfer plans will become much clearer if and when they secure their Premier League status.

However, Bassong feels his former team need one defender, a midfielder and an attacker apiece at the very least, as the current squad has too many gaping holes.

Speaking with Read Tottenham via freebets.com, the home of the best betting sites, he said, “I think Spurs need a striker, centre midfielder and extra centre back.”

However, the Cameroonian also feels Tottenham’s lack of European football could come back to haunt them as top players would want to play in the best competitions.

Bassong, however, claimed that De Zerbi is well-connected within the game, which would allow him to use his contacts and influence to add to his squad.

“In terms of names, it’s difficult, but Spurs should be aiming as high as possible, so you have to also look at European football, and Spurs can’t offer that next season.

“This is an issue with looking to attract the top players, but we know Spurs need to pay higher wages, so if they can do this, then even though they have no European football, they can invest in young players, pay them a good wage and then aim for European football the following year.

“De Zerbi may well know players he has worked with at Marseille/Brighton, who would come to Spurs, so this can be an option.”

The players reliably linked with Tottenham recently

Aside from Senesi and Robertson, we have covered Tottenham’s goalkeeping shortlist extensively on Read Tottenham, and here are some of the names linked:

  • James Trafford (Manchester City)
  • Noah Atubolu (Freiburg)
  • Robin Risser (Lens)
  • Robin Roefs (Sunderland)
  • Lucas Chevalier (PSG)
  • Karl Darlow (Leeds United)
  • Bart Verbruggen (Brighton)

Bassong mentioned that the Italian could use his contacts to make potential signings. If that were to be the case, De Zerbi’s influence could help Tottenham’s pursuit of Verbruggen due to his previous ties with Brighton.

Jan Paul van Hecke has also been linked with a move to N17, and the Dutchman is another player De Zerbi knows well from his stint with the Seagulls.

Tottenham will need to make multiple signings in the summer transfer window to cover all bases, so they must be smart about how they allocate funds.

De Zerbi has been there and done it at Brighton, Marseille, Sassuolo and Shakhtar, and will once again be tasked with building a squad with Tottenham.

And if his first few games are anything to go by, he could truly build something special at the club if given time and the right resources.

matchday.
