At a glance:
- Tottenham’s relegation possibility dips
- West Ham in serious trouble
- Only two Premier League games remain
The Premier League relegation battle is officially between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United with two games left.
In recent weeks, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have fared admirably to secure safety mathematically.
Tottenham have also been good under Roberto De Zerbi, picking up eight points from their last four Premier League games.
However, they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Leeds last week in a game that could have taken them within touching distance of safety.
And now, ahead of the weekend’s action, Opta have revealed Tottenham and West Ham’s exact relegation possibilities.
Tottenham well poised to avoid relegation
West Ham played before Tottenham last week and lost 1-0 to Arsenal in a game that had its fair share of drama and controversy.
De Zerbi and Co knew a win against Leeds at home would have taken them four points clear, which would have put them in a fantastic position.
However, a late penalty from Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelled out Mathys Tel’s opener as Daniel Farke’s side left North London with a well-deserved point.
With two games to go, Spurs are two points above 18th-placed West Ham, so they still have their destiny in their own hands.
And as seen above, Tottenham’s relegation probability at the moment is around 20%, with West Ham’s chances sitting at a whopping 80% due to their defeat against Arsenal.
Tottenham and West Ham’s remaining fixtures
Tottenham take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next before finishing their season against Everton in North London.
The Blues are struggling but picked up a point against Liverpool, with Callum McFarlane on the touchline for the second time this season as interim boss after Liam Rosenior’s sacking.
West Ham, on the other hand, face Newcastle United away this weekend, after which they’ll face Leeds at home on the final matchday of the season.
Tottenham’s survival could be mathematically confirmed this week if they secure three points against Chelsea and the Hammers fail to win at St James’ Park.
De Zerbi’s side play after West Ham this week – as was the case last time around as well – so they could also be under a lot of pressure if the Hammers win at Tyneside.
The relegation battle is set to go down to the wire, but it goes without saying that Tottenham are in a much better position now than was the case before De Zerbi’s arrival.
