- Tottenham will not move for Greenwood
- De Zerbi worked with Englishman at Marseille
- Apologised for comments after joining Spurs
Mason Greenwood is reportedly set to leave Marseille this summer, and Tottenham have been touted to be one of the clubs interested in signing him by the media.
Roberto De Zerbi worked with the former Manchester United star in France, and the fans have been vocal about it even before the Italian joined the club. Spurs fans were not pleased with the manager’s comments about the Englishman, who was suspended at Old Trafford.
De Zerbi was full of praise for Greenwood when they started working together at Marseille, claiming that the forward was working hard in training. He said:
“I don’t want to get involved in anyone’s private life. All I can see is that Mason seems a good lad, he paid in a strong way for what happened. He has probably here found the right environment for him, which gave him affection, and held out its hand to him.”
“When I look at him as a person, I feel sad for what happened in his life, without getting into the details. Because the person I know here is very different to the one that has been described, especially in England.”
The comments and months together at the Ligue 1 club have led to rumours about Tottenham showing interest in the Englishman this summer.
Tottenham not planning Mason Greenwood move
Greenwood has fallen out of favour at Marseille, but Tottenham are not thinking about making a move for the Englishman.
According to a report in TEAMtalk, the 24-year-old is not a part of the summer plans for the North London side, despite their plans to bolster the attack, and De Zerbi is also not interested in signing him.
Feyenoord’s Ayase Ueda and Besiktas’ Oh Hyeon-gyu have been linked with a move to Spurs, while Brentford forward Kevin Schade is also said to be on the club’s radar. They are working on the shortlist ahead of the summer window, but the Englishman has been ruled out.
Manchester United sold Greenwood for £25 million and have a 50% sell-on clause in his Marseille contract. The Ligue 1 side will demand more than what they paid for him, as he has done well at the club, scoring 47 goals and assisting 16 times in just 79 games.
Roberto De Zerbi apologised after Tottenham fans objected his arrival
A large section of Tottenham fans were against the hiring of De Zerbi this year after the Italian’s past comments about Greenwood circulated. The manager issued an apology soon after making the move to North London, adding that he was against all forms of violence and said:
“I was a bit sad and sorry it happened because I’m sorry if somebody took offence. I must repeat what I said. This topic is very close to me. I’m very sensitive about this topic because of the person I am and because I have a daughter. And so I must repeat what I said the other time.”
“I have always been against – always – any type of violence, especially against women. But not only violence – even just sexist jokes or other sexist behaviours.
“I have a daughter and I’m directly affected by it. I know who I am. I know the type of person I am, so I wasn’t annoyed by the questions – I’m just sad about them.”
Greenwood has been linked with Juventus and Atletico Madrid, who are keen on bolstering their attack this summer.
