Tottenham Hotspur are going through yet another major injury crisis this season, having suffered an unprecedented one last year.
With three games remaining, Spurs have four players out for the season. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have yet to play a single minute. Meanwhile, the likes of Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Lucas Bergvall have all spent months out injured.
This injury crisis has played a big part in them being in the relegation zone in the Premier League.
Dimitar Berbatov explains why Tottenham could have so many injuries
According to Transfermarkt, Spurs have been impacted the most by injuries this season. Including pre-season, they have suffered three ACL injuries, along with numerous other big injuries.
The club’s medical staff has come under serious scrutiny, as the pattern has continued for two years in a row.
Amidst this, former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has opened up about the potential reasons for their injuries, telling The Athletic:
“The list of injured players can show you a deeper issue going on. It’s about how the players take care of themselves before, during and after the games, how they relax and take care of their bodies.
“Then comes the medical department, the physios, the doctors and how they’re caring for injured players. It’s all connected.”
“And sometimes, if there are many injuries, you need to check this over. Also, the training methods: are they training when they’re a bit injured?
“Sometimes players should rest, and training can cause muscle stress. It’s been a problem for Spurs for quite some time,” he added.

Berbatov especially rued the ACL injury to Xavi Simons, claiming that it was ‘cruel’ as he was getting into form.
Tottenham need to strengthen their squad
Spurs need a major investigation into their medical staff, coaching staff, and every other factor that contributes to these injuries.
One unverified theory also questions the impact of a retractable pitch, as Real Madrid have also suffered a lot of injuries after they changed their pitch.

However, one clear big factor for Tottenham’s injuries is a poor squad. Often, the main players have to play a lot of minutes and are rushed back due to a lack of rotational options. The likes of Destiny Udogie and Mohammed Kudus are big examples of these issues.
Last season, Spurs only had young players on the bench, leading to senior players being run into the ground.
Hence, the club’s hierarchy needs to make a good squad if they want to compete in all competitions. With the modern football schedule, it is impossible for a top team to depend on just a good starting XI.
