At a glance:
- Tottenham want Marcus Rashford
- Barcelona may not be able to sign him permanently
- La Liga giants plotting second loan spell
This week, Marcus Rashford’s name has been mentioned as a potential transfer target for Tottenham.
The Manchester United man is currently with Barcelona on a season-long loan deal.
The Catalan giants can sign him permanently, but they may fail to do so due to financial constraints and other transfer priorities.
Tottenham are interested in signing Rashford if he fails to join Barcelona.
And now, after Premier League interest, the La Liga giants have taken the next step to get their man.
Tottenham dealt Marcus Rashford blow
Rashford started really well at Barcelona but has fizzled out a little bit since the turn of the year.
Additionally, Barcelona have their own financial constraints, due to which they have to err on the side of caution with potential transfers.
Due to the aforementioned factors, they are now plotting a second loan move for Rashford, which could be a blow for Tottenham.
Florian Plettenberg reports that Barcelona don’t want to trigger the €30m option to sign him permanently. Instead, they want him on a season-long loan deal again, although it remains to be seen if Manchester United agree to these terms.
Nevertheless, it is a massive blow for Tottenham in their race for the Englishman, who is no stranger to Premier League football.
Rashford’s intentions are clear
Plettenberg’s report also confirms that Hansi Flick has approved his signing. That is a clear sign he is wanted by the manager and the club; they are just looking for a feasible way to get the deal over the line.
Additionally, Rashford has spoken about how much he is enjoying his time in Barcelona, which is confirmation that he has his heart set on a permanent move to Spain.
“Oh yeah, for sure,” Rashford exclusively told ESPN in October when asked if he wanted to stay at Barcelona.
“I’m enjoying this football club and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game. For a player, it is an honour.”
Tottenham are clearly not his first choice, so De Zerbi and co are better off finding someone who actually want to play for the club.
The North London outfit will be in the market for an attacker or two and it remains to be seen who they target. A lot could hinge on their Premier League status, so their first task will be to avoid relegation.
