Xavi Simons’ shock move to Tottenham’s rivals scuppered due to injury

At a glance:

  • Manchester United want Xavi Simons before injury
  • Dutchman now ruled out with ACL injury
  • Rules out potential transfer

Xavi Simons’ name has been mentioned a lot in recent weeks, especially after the Tottenham midfielder’s recent ACL injury.

The Dutchman hit the ground against Wolves with a suspected knee problem. While he initially tried to run it off, it quickly became clear that he wouldn’t be able to continue.

Simons then left the pitch on a stretcher, which wasn’t a good sign for Tottenham.

And early this morning, it was confirmed that he will miss the rest of the season and also the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to his injury.

That isn’t the only complication involving the Dutchman, though. In terms of a potential transfer, reported interest from a Premier League rival is unlikely to progress due to his latest setback.

Manchester United wanted Simons before ACL problem

Manchester United are in a good position to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League under Michael Carrick. If that happens, they will be in a good position to attract some of the best players in the world.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are remarkably in the relegation zone and only have four games left to save themselves from the drop.

If they drop down to the Championship, most of their important players are likely to leave.

As relayed by Caught Offside, Manchester United were plotting a move for Simons before he did his ACL against Wolves.

The Red Devils are on the lookout for a creative player, with the Dutchman impressing in recent weeks under Roberto De Zerbi.

The report also claims that in the case of Tottenham’s relegation, they would have been forced to part with Simons for a fee in the region of £26m, which is half of what they paid to Leipzig to secure his signature.

After his injury, the transfer will obviously not materialise as he isn’t expected to return to action until 2027.

Barcelona and Galatasaray were also linked with Simons but will now have to look elsewhere due to his injury.

Hammer blow for Tottenham

As we mentioned earlier, talks of a transfer can well and truly take a back seat now as the Dutchman faces a long road back to full fitness.

Simons released an emotional statement after his injury was confirmed, as he urged the fans to keep the faith and be patient with him.

It truly is a massive blow for Tottenham and the player himself, who was just starting to show his class.

Simons delivered a fantastic performance against Brighton with a goal and an assist and was lively before going off vs Wolves.

The road to recovery may be long, but everyone associated with Tottenham and the Netherlands are with you, Xavi.
