Tottenham open to selling player who Roberto De Zerbi publicly praised recently

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a busy summer transfer window, especially in terms of outgoings.

It is currently unclear whether Tottenham will play in the Premier League or the EFL Championship next season. However, they will certainly be seeing multiple players depart this summer. The likes of Yves Bissouma and Ben Davies will likely leave as free agents, with their contracts expiring this summer.

Moreover, Tottenham will not have European football next season. Hence, some of their top players could leave for greener pastures even if they avoid relegation.

Tottenham open to selling Conor Gallagher

Spurs have recruited poorly over the years, which has led to a poor squad with a mix of players who don’t suit a particular style of football. Their midfield is bloated with similar profiles of players, but none of them is a highly technical pass-first midfielder.

In January this year, Tottenham signed Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for £35 million. He has made 12 appearances for the north London side in different positions, but has failed to put in one good performance.

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown has now told Football Insider that the club are open to selling Gallagher this summer.

He said: “Tottenham could look to cash in on him at the end of the season, admit things haven’t worked out, and then look to get their money back.

“Even if they stay in the Premier League, his performances this season haven’t suggested he has a big role to play in the future, so it might be best to move on. As I say, there will be clubs willing to take him away, so it’s definitely a real possibility.”

Notably, Roberto De Zerbi has heaped praise on Gallagher since his appointment as the Tottenham head coach. Before their game against Sunderland, he said:

“I want to see again the same Gallagher I loved in [his] Chelsea time.”

However, the English midfielder put in another disappointing performance against the Black Cats as Spurs lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Tottenham should sell Gallagher

While it would further highlight their poor recruitment and planning publicly, Tottenham should sell Gallagher. With the current makeup of their midfield, they need a major rebuild and need space for it. Bissouma is expected to leave this summer, and Joao Palhinha could also return to Bayern after his loan spell.

Hence, Spurs should also look to cut their losses on Gallagher as quickly as they can. As per Football Insider, Crystal Palace retain their interest in the Englishman after he had a good loan spell with them in the 2021-22 season. Aston Villa, who almost signed him before Tottenham in January, are also interested.

Gallagher is definitely a good player. However, Tottenham cannot afford to part ways with their other talented youngsters like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall. They also have some excellent academy players like Tyrese Hall and Callum Olusesi.

Hence, they must avoid blocking the pathway for these youngsters and part ways with the loads of No. 8s they have.

The Lilywhites need to bring in highly technical and pass-first defensive midfielders, like Adam Wharton or Angelo Stiller.
