Harry Kane is finally getting his plaudits now after years of being underappreciated at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have had some incredible players over the years, but not many as good as Harry Kane.

The England skipper scored twice and assisted once to help Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals this week. He has now scored 50 goals this season, marking the first time he’s breached that mark. He’s rightly getting all the plaudits and recognition from across the globe.

Kane is also a frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or at the moment. However, he has been doing this since his Tottenham days, and he barely got any recognition for it.

Harry Kane has been one of the best strikers in world football since his Tottenham days

Kane came through Tottenham’s academy and had multiple disappointing loan spells. However, when he came into the first team, it became clear that he was going to become a superstar. He is now Spurs’ all-time top scorer with 280 goals and 63 assists in 435 games.

The England skipper was so good at Spurs that he was even competing with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He outscored the duo in the calendar year, netting 56 goals in 52 games, while Messi and Ronaldo scored 54 and 53, respectively. However, he barely got any credit, and people don’t even remember that feat.

In the 2020-21 season, Kane was the top goalscorer and assist provider in the Premier League. However, Ruben Dias won the Premier League Player of the Season award that campaign. The Tottenham striker also finished 23rd in the Ballon d’Or rankings that year!

The 32-year-old has won three Premier League Golden Boots while playing for Tottenham. He is the second all-time top scorer in the Premier League, just 47 goals behind Alan Shearer.

He has also shown his prowess across different systems under coaches such as Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte.

Kane was holding Tottenham together for a long time

In 2023, Tottenham sold Kane to Bayern Munich, as he looked to win trophies. They then finished 5th and 17th in the Premier League and won the UEFA Europa League.

This season, they are in the relegation zone with six games remaining. This just shows how influential the England striker was for the club, not just in terms of goals, but also his leadership.

Now, it’s not entirely down to him, but Kane’s departure left a massive hole in the Spurs squad. He won numerous games singlehandedly during his time with the North London side. Tottenham’s attack now is highly inconsistent and lacks the highest quality, even when everyone is fit.

No one can replace the Englishman in world football, but the club’s board has failed to build a competitive attack since his departure. It’s no surprise that in the same season where Kane is campaigning for a Ballon d’Or, Tottenham are hurtling towards relegation.

However, it’s also no surprise that he is finally getting the recognition for the things he has consistently been doing for almost a decade now.
