Damning statistic shows just how bad a signing Conor Gallagher has been for Tottenham so far

Tottenham Hotspur have set an example in making terrible football-related decisions under the ownership of ENIC and the Lewis family.

Over the last decade, they have made numerous terrible decisions. This includes terrible recruitment on the player and manager side, to juggling between different playing styles, and much more.

The culmination of all these long and short-term decisions sees Tottenham battling relegation for the first time in Premier League history. They are 18th, with six games remaining, two points behind West Ham, three behind Nottingham Forest, and six behind Leeds United.

Conor Gallagher showcases another Tottenham recruitment mishap

Spurs were poor under Thomas Frank, even when the majority of the squad was fit. However, they started to see major injuries in December and clearly needed reinforcements in the January transfer window. They sold Brennan Johnson and saw Mohammed Kudus suffer a major hamstring injury.

However, they only signed Conor Gallagher and Souza. The latter is a 19-year-old left-back who would understandably take time to fit in the Premier League. On the other hand, Tottenham already have numerous similar midfielders and hence, signing Gallagher was a poor decision.

This has been further proven by a recent statistic. Many expected the Englishman to provide grit, steel, and running power in midfield. However, as per Driblab, Tottenham have conceded 18 non-penalty goals in the Premier League in the 776 minutes Gallagher has been on the pitch. This makes it 2.1 npg per 90, the highest in the league.

This is a damning stat, but it has been evident by watching the game as well. In his 12 appearances, Gallagher has failed to produce a single good performance. He has one assist, but that also came as Dominic Solanke scored an outrageous scorpion kick in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

Gallagher signing just one of many Tottenham recruitment issues

Tottenham have needed a pass-first technical midfielder for a long time. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was perhaps their best passing midfielder in recent years, and even he wasn’t suited to that profile. However, not only have Spurs failed to sign one, they have bloated the squad with the opposite profile.

Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, and Pape Matar Sarr all arguably have similar profiles with different skill sets.

To add to it, Tottenham signed Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich last summer. While he has scored some crucial goals, he doesn’t have the technical ability Spurs need.

The north London side then decided to add another similar profile in January. Now, Tottenham are open to selling Gallagher in the summer. This further demonstrates how bad Spurs’ recruitment has been in recent years. The fact that they are in a relegation battle proves this.
