Dejan Kulusevski hasn’t featured for Tottenham since the back end of the 2024-25 campaign.
The Swedish midfielder was initially sidelined with a knock, but upon closer examination, it was revealed that he suffered a serious right patella (knee) injury that required surgery.
Kulusevski was recently spotted with the Sweden squad as they booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which led to claims that he is close to returning to action.
However, he’s still on the sidelines and with just six Premier League games to go, he is unlikely to play for the club this season.
Tottenham could have a mass exodus this summer if they get relegated, which is understandable, as most of their senior players wouldn’t be too thrilled by the prospect of playing Championship football.
However, Gianluca Di Marzio has delivered an update on Kulusevski that Tottenham fans will absolutely love.
Kulusevski to stay at Tottenham
The former Juventus midfielder has been out of action for nearly a year now as he continues to work his way back up to full fitness.
After Sweden’s triumph over Denmark, Kulusevski confirmed he could be available for the World Cup, which is scheduled to commence in two months.
In the meantime, speculation surrounding his future have unsurprisingly emerged in the media.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio believes the Swede will remain at Tottenham even if they get relegated for many reasons.
He said (via Football London): “I definitely think Kulusevski will stay at Tottenham, even if they get relegated. He is a good example for other players and Roberto De Zerbi likes him.
“He has the right mentality, so I think Kulusevski can be one of the most important players for their project, regardless of whether they are in the Premier League or the Championship.
“De Zerbi will really try to keep him. He loves players like him who have strong identities and personalities. He will definitely try to keep him.”
Kulusevski the dream No.10 for De Zerbi
There are doubts over whether Kulusevski can return to his best after such a horrific injury.
However, in terms of his profile, the Swede is the perfect fit to play as a No.10 in De Zerbi’s 4-2-3-1 set-up. Lucas Bergvall has played there this season and has looked out of sorts.

To be fair to the youngster, he is better suited to a deeper role, as was the case under Postecoglou last season.
Moreover, Tottenham have supported Kulusevski during the toughest spell of his career, so it would make sense for the Swede to repay the club’s faith in him by helping them get out of the hole they’ve dug themselves into during his absence.
