Tottenham Hotspur’s season hit a new low on Thursday as they were well beaten 3-1 by Crystal Palace at home despite taking the lead.
Igor Tudor’s side are now winless in their last 11 Premier League games as they edge precariously close to the relegation zone.
When Dominic Solanke broke the deadlock against the run of play, it looked like Spurs had turned a corner. However, an alarming defensive capitulation – that saw captain Micky van de Ven receive his marching orders – meant they went into the interval 3-1 down.
After the game, Tudor addressed the media after one of the worst nights in the club’s recent history.
And judging by the way he spoke, he is certainly feeling the pressure of being in a relegation dog fight, with his position as Tottenham’s interim boss coming under doubt already.
Tudor coy about Tottenham future
The Croatian has lost each of his first three games in charge of the club, with his team scoring just three times and conceding nine goals in that period.
After the defeat to Arsenal, Tudor claimed the Tottenham job was much harder than expected, a comment that didn’t really instill much confidence in fans.
And now, with Tottenham just a point above the relegation zone, he was faced by journalists who quizzed him directly about his future.
When asked if the club’s hierarchy will allow him to carry on trying to steady the ship, Tudor said: “I don’t think in that direction. I have my job to do and that’s all.”
When grilled further and asked if fans could expect to see him in the job for their next game, the Croatian simply quipped (quotes via Football London): “No comment on that question.”
Last week, Tudor refused to entertain questions about Tottenham potentially getting relegated.
And now, he has delivered a rather coy response to questions surrounding his own future, making him a tough nut to crack, particularly in front of the media.
Upcoming run could decide everything
Tottenham face Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 next week, but the outcome of that tie is unlikely to have any bearing on their season as their Premier League performance needs immediate improvement.
Domestically, they face Liverpool at Anfield next weekend, after which they will prepare for the visit of Nottingham Forest in a relegation six-pointer if there ever was one.
That is the game Tottenham should earmark to win as it would not only give them three points but also plunge their opponents closer to the drop zone.
