Spurs to battle Liverpool and Arsenal for Suso – but is he what they need?

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on a deal to sign AC Milan midfielder Suso – but is he the type of player Spurs need at this moment in time?

TEAMtalk cite Tuttomercatoweb in reporting that Suso’s former club Liverpool and Arsenal are also weighing up a move for the playmaker.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a relatively successful season in front of goal for the Italian club this season, scoring seven goals an providing 10 assists in Serie A.

Those figures are relatively comparable to Spurs man Lucas Moura who managed 10 top-flight goals, but just behind the achievements of Christian Eriksen who provided eight goals and 12 assists in the Premier League.

The Spaniard is fairly versatile when it comes to positions, featuring predominantly on either flank but also known to be comfortable in a central attacking midfield role.

Signing him would allow Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino to play Eriksen, should he be at the club next season, in his favoured central role more frequently, as well as providing much-needed competition for Moura and Dele Alli.

His set-piece taking and passing abilities will also be of use to the North London club as they look to build on the successes of this campaign, which could see them become the Champions of Europe in just over a week’s time.

One concern about Suso would be his failure to establish himself at Liverpool, whom he represented between July 2010 and January 2015.

During that time he made just 21 appearances for the Reds and spent a year on loan at Almeria, so it remains to be seen whether he would be able to cope with the rigours of the Premier League this time around.

In addition, the midfielder managed just one goal and one assist since November, so his stats for the season don’t quite reflect his form in front of goal over recent months.

Suso has a £33m release clause, which may be a bit steep for a player who flopped when previously at a top English club and has just two Spain caps to his name.
