Lloris: Respect Within Squad is Key

Hugo Lloris has told the official Tottenham website that a key driving force in the team’s success this season is the respect in competition the players have for one another and used the example of Spurs’ four full-backs to highlight this.

This comes after the 1-0 victory against Watford in which Kieran Trippier scored the winning goal, whilst on the opposite side, Ben Davies was a constant threat, roaming up and down the left flank.

When questioned on the importance of the full backs, the Spurs skipper responded:

I think we’re lucky to have four great full-backs. There is good competition between them because there is a lot of respect between them. After the gaffer picks a player it doesn’t matter who is on the pitch, everyone is aware that we need to push the team as far as possible because we don’t want to miss a great opportunity. Everyone is aware of that and that’s why the spirit is so great in the team.

The Frenchman then highlighted the different elements that have made Spurs such a force this season before reiterating how much he is enjoying life at White Hart Lane.

I’ve always spoken about having the ‘basics’ in the team and we have the basics. We have the talent, we have the working mentality and we have improved a lot tactically and technically. Individually as well, a lot of players are improving and because we are young, some players don’t know their limit. That’s very good. The competition inside the club helps push everyone even more. For me, I’m 29, I have more than 10 years behind me in professional football and I’m enjoying this moment at Tottenham because it’s very difficult at the highest level of football to keep the right balance in the team and at the moment, we’re doing that.

However, the former Lyon keeper, remained typically cautious when pondering how far the team can go this season, and reaffirmed the need to stay vigilant and prepare for each game as they come.

We cannot forget that things can turn around quickly in football. That’s why we always have to be vigilant about what’s happening every day. That’s the role of the gaffer, the staff, the experienced players – to put the team in the best condition every day for every game. We’re having a great season because we are still in the cups, still in the league, there are a lot of things to try to reach and that’s exciting.

Like Lloris, Spurs fans are becoming suitably excited with the team’s performances this season which has been one of the best in living memory for much of the fan base.

The Lilywhites travel North this weekend to face fellow title-contenders Manchester City at the Etihad where a win could well and truly place Spurs in the title hunt, the first time Spurs have had such an opportunity since the 1986/87 season when David Pleat’s side eventually finished third.

Can Spurs win the Title? If not now, what about if we beat Manchester City this weekend? Let us know in the comments box below.
