Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has expressed frustration regarding his side’s 1-0 home defeat to Leicester last night, stating that Spurs must improve against teams who play long balls in order to progress this season reports the Evening Standard.
Spurs failed to capitalise on a chance to shorten the gap between them and last night’s opponents as they slumped to a 1-0 loss as a result of Robert Huth’s late header being enough to see off the threat of Vertonghen’s men.
“How do we approach games against teams who drop deep against us? We can improve.”
Despite the loss, Spurs still remain in fourth place and in contention for Champions League qualification, however they will need to iron out needless performances such as these against Leicester in order to pursue this season’s ambitions.

“They drop deep and then they count on set-pieces or one of their strikers. They have won most of their games like this and they play their game very well. It works for them. Every player knows his qualities and that is a very important thing.”
The 28-year-old was quick to criticise Leicester’s style of play, after last night’s ‘smash and grab’ job that they carried out on Spurs, stating that the Foxes approached the game in the same way as they always do.
“They always approach the game in the same way — kick every ball they get long and run, and if they don’t have the ball they defend.”
Spurs will look to put this disappointing result behind them as they take on the in-form Sunderland at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
