With Spurs looking to strengthen their squad in pursuit of a top four finish, they have reportedly declared ‘concrete’ interest in Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi.
The Italian was voted Serie A young player of the year in 2014 having hit an impressive 16 goals in 26 games during the 2013/14 season. The 21 year-old continued this form into the following season scoring 15 in 32 as well as laying on 10 assists for his team-mates.
Berardi is reasonably similar in playing-style to long-term Spurs target Saido Berahino, in that he is well capable of playing up-front but for large parts of his career has been deployed in something of wide-forward role.
Yet this position clearly hasn’t affected the youngster’s goal-scoring prowess as is shown by his stellar record as well as the four goals he hit in one game against AC Milan when he was just 19 years-old.
It was this game that really shot Berardi into prominence, however by this stage Juventus had already signed the forward on a co-ownership basis with Sassuolo, and it was expected that Juventus would eventually take the Italian Under-21 international on a permanent basis.
Yet despite this, in the summer of 2015 it was announced that the co-ownership agreement had ended, with Sassuolo keeping their prized asset.
This has alerted many of Europe’s top clubs and Spurs will be hoping they can tie up any move for Berardi before other clubs inevitably come sniffing.
However, despite Juventus ending their co-ownsersip agreement, they reportedly still have first refusal over the Italian for £18 million which is considerably less than the £29 million Tottenham will allegedly have to fork out to bring their target to White Hart Lane.
