Match preview: Anderlecht vs Tottenham

Reminiscent of the famous 1984 UEFA Cup final, Anderlecht entertain a Tottenham team looking to extend their lead at the top of Group J in the Europa League.

The last time these two sides met was way back in 2007, when a Dimitar Berbatov penalty helped Tottenham to a 1-1 draw in Belgium.

However, Spurs enter this game facing something of an injury crisis, with Nacer Chadli limping out of action against Liverpool and is set to miss about four weeks of football, in what presents a headache to Mauricio Pochettino.

Anderlecht meanwhile sit a point off top spot in the Belgian Pro League, having just lost once in the league and are unbeaten in their last seven league games.

In what was a shock last time out in the Europa League, Anderlecht fell down away to Azerbaijan champions Qarabag, which puts added pressure on Thursday’s fixture to get a good result.

Their last home match in the competition was a 1-1 draw against tough opponents Monaco, so anything less than a win would put the Belgian side’s qualification hopes in serious jeopardy.

But having failed to win their last six Europa League matches, Besnik Hasi’s team are struggling in Europe and with three draws in their last five domestic games, Anderlecht have struggled for goals, hindered by the loss of Alexander Mitrovic to Newcastle United in the summer.

However, they did beat Zulte Waregem impressively 4-0 away from home in their last league game, with Stefano Okaka notching his fifth and sixth goals of the season, so they welcome Tottenham in good form and in full spirits, with Anderlecht hoping to get their European campaign back on track.

Like Anderlecht, Tottenham also enter this game with an excellent unbeaten record, having gone eight Premier League games without defeat, with the joint-best defensive record along with Arsenal.

However, their problems lie upfront, with Harry Kane scoring just once in a lilywhite shirt and with Nacer Chadli now set for a spell on the sidelines with Heung-min Son, Spurs’ first team options are limited.

Andros Townsend is likely to get the chance to stake his claim for a regular spot in the side, but it remains to be seen if Kane will continue to lead the line, or if he will be spared with Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth in mind.

With four points from their opening two group games, a win away would almost certainly send Spurs on their way to qualification. But Spurs seem to have become draw specialists, registering six draws across all competitions and three in their last three games.

Full backs Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies are likely to replace Kyle Walker and Danny Rose respectively, whilst Eric Dier may return from his ban in the heart of midfield.

Prediction: Anderlecht 1-2 Tottenham
