Clubs were interested in signing Andros Townsend from Spurs

Andros Townsend was linked with a number of clubs this summer but remained at White Hart Lane after failing to make a move before deadline day.

The 24-year old England international was linked with former manager Tim Sherwood at Aston Villa alongside other clubs such as Newcastle and Sunderland, but none of these sides managed to strike a deal with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Troy Townsend, who is the father of the Tottenham winger, was questioned about the transfer rumours and if there was any interest on Spurs Fan Podcast, The Fighting Cock.

“Yeah, there was. There were a few clubs tapping on the door asking if he was available and asking to take him,” claimed the player’s father.

“The club gave us no signs that there was anything going on in that respect, but obviously rumours are there for a reason.

“Luckily the injuries came so early in pre-season which meant that nothing could have happened.”

Townsend has been working hard to get his fitness levels back up to his previous standards after picking up an ankle injury leaving him out of Tottenham’s pre-season plans.

Manager, Mauricio Pochettino was impressed with the midfielder’s performance against Sunderland last week, but the winger failed to stand out in matches against Qarabag and North London rivals, Arsenal last night.

With a number of young midfielders coming up the ranks, Townsend may struggle to find his place in Potchettino’s side, as players such as Josh Onomah and Alex Pritchard are starting to be introduced.

Come January and if the midfielder is still failing to make the mark, we could see Townsend leaving the club he has been at since the age of nine.
