- Tyson Fury in action at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
- Gypsy King comes out of retirement
- Spurs on a similar mission as British boxing heavyweight
British boxing heavyweight Tyson Fury will collide with Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (April 11th). The former two-time world heavyweight champion has come out of retirement for the bout.
It’s been 15 months since Fury was last in a boxing ring, suffering back-to-back defeats to undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. This was the first time in his career the Gypsy King had been defeated, and as such, he seemed to call it quits.
That was until early January, when the 37-year-old revealed his plans to continue fighting. But he is in desperate need of a win over Makhmudov to get his career back on track.
Tyson Fury Back in the Ring
Fury will compete at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which has housed many spectacles in the past. His victory over Derek Chisora back in December 2022 was one of them.
The fight is viewed as a potential buildup to a much-desired clash of British greats. There remains a huge interest in seeing Fury collide with Spurs fan and fellow Brit Anthony Joshua sooner rather than never.
Fury will have to be wary of Makhmudov and can’t take the fight lightly. The Canadian-based boxer is a knockout artist and has won 90 per cent of his fights by knockout.
Fury Gunning For Heavyweight Division
The press conference for Fury and Makhmudov’s bout took place on Friday (April 10th). The Brit fired a warning to his opponent about his plans for the fight along with reclaiming his place at the top of the heavyweight division.
Fury said he’d lay Makhmudov “unconscious” and added (via Boxing Social):
“Not only will I do it to him, I will do it to all of them like I’ve done many times in the past before,” Fury told the heavyweight division, while Makhmudov started nodding off at yesterday’s official press conference. “Sooner or later these so called alphabetical world champions are going to have to fight me. Whoever it might be, whoever has got the belt at the time will be hunted and will be destroyed.”
Fury’s fight comes on the same weekend as Tottenham kickstart a new era under Roberto De Zerbi. The Lilywhites aren’t at home and instead make the trip to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland on Sunday (April 12th).
There are similarities between the Gypsy King’s comeback and the possibility of a Spurs revival. De Zerbi arrived earlier this month as Igor Tudor’s replacement and is tasked with guiding his team to Premier League survival.
