With Tottenham securing their first win of the season against Sunderland at the weekend, we at ReadTottenham have decided to take a look at four things we learnt from the game that was decided by Ryan Mason’s late goal.
Is it the system?
It’s obvious to everyone that something is just not quite right for Harry Kane when he pulls on the Tottenham shirt. One reason for his lack of form could be due to the system that Tottenham continue to employ, even though the player who makes that system work in Eriksen is currently out injured. Therefore meaning that the system is perhaps not playing to Kane’s strengths and they lack a player of Eriksen’s quality to come and fill in for him if he is injured as he currently is meaning that Spurs are being starved of creativity in the final third and it is one of the possible reasons as to why he has yet to score this season.

Dier is growing into his central midfield role
When Eric Dier was pushed forward into central midfield earlier this season by Pochettino, a few eyebrows were raised as he had been performing well in defence and Tottenham had a quite a lot of options in the central midfield roles. However, he has rewarded Pochettino’s gamble and was recently rewarded with a new contract which shows how well he is adapted to his midfield role and how much Tottenham value him as an important asset going into the next future.

Son will need time to adapt to the Premier League
Much was expected from some quarters ahead of Son Heung-Min’s debut in the North-East, however in truth he had a poor game before being replaced by Andros Townsend during the second half as he struggled to keep up with the speed and the tempo during the game. With Spurs struggling to create chances and function as an attacking unit without Eriksen, it will be hoped that Son’s adjustment to the Premier League doesn’t take too long because Spurs badly need a creative outlet.

Goals from midfield will be vital

As evidenced by Ryan Mason scoring the winner on Wearside, midfielders chipping in with goals on a regular basis could be the difference between Spurs finishing in the Europa League places and finishing in the elusive Champions League spots. With Eriksen injured and Kane woefully out of form, it will fall to the likes of Mason, Alli (who has already scored against Leicester this season), Chadli and Bentaleb to score goals and keep Spurs in the running for those elusive European spots at the end of the season.
