A 1-0 win in the North-West meant that Sunderland remain waiting on their first win of the season, but that Spurs also got their first win of the season thanks to Ryan Mason’s late strike.
The first half saw Sunderland and Tottenham both cancelling each other out, with the occasional heavy tackle coming in from both sides. In truth, Jermain Defoe’s effort was the only time either side came close to scoring as the former Tottenham man raced through on goal after breaking through Tottenham’s offside trap only to hit the post.
The second half began in much of the same fashion, as tensions on the pitch began to escalate on the pitch in the first 10 minutes of the second half due to some late and heavy tackles. However, as the second half wore on with substitutions made by both sides, the game became more stretched as both sides chased a winner and their first wins of the season.

With the game approaching the 75-minute mark, Harry Kane had the goal at his mercy, but he sliced his shot wide of the right-hand post which means that last season’s main man has failed to score in the Premier League this season with five games gone.
As the clock ticked past the 80-minute mark, it was the unlikely figure of Ryan Mason who broke through Sunderland’s offside trap, receiving a pass from and lifted the ball over the onrushing Panitllimon.
New signing Son Heung-Min had a disappointing debut as he failed to have an impact on the game and was replaced in the second-half by the returning Andros Townsend who was making his first appearance of the season.
Overall, today’s win means that Spurs move up to 12th which they ill be hoping to build on when Crystal Palace arrive at White Hart Lane next Sunday, although Harry Kane’s lack of goals will be a concern for Maurico Pochettino.
