Duo play in important Belgium win

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld featured as Belgium beat Bosnia-Herzogovina 3-1 in their Euro 2016 qualifier on Thursday evening.

The defensive pair played the full ninety minutes, but Nacer Chadli was an unused substitute, as Marc Wilmots’ side secured an important win to keep them within three points of group leaders Wales with three games left.

Chris Coleman’s team won 1-0 at Cyprus ensuring that a victory against Israel on Tuesday night will guarantee the Welsh qualification to next year’s finals in France.

Former Spurs player Gareth Bale scored the winner just eight minutes from time, whilst Ben Davies played at left-back for the whole game in Nicosia.

Elsewhere, Dele Alli and Eric Dier both started for England U21s as they overcame USA U23s 1-0 in a tricky tie at Preston North End’s Deepdale.

Alli, making his debut, played in centre-midfield, whilst Dier was restored to his more familair centre-back role as the Young Lions got the better of their counterparts from across the pond.

Another debutant James Wilson got the all-important winner in the second-half, by which point both players had been withdrawn from action.

There will be more familair faces in international action on Friday night, with Denmark’s Christian Eriksen poised for a return from injury against Albania, whilst Hugo Lloris is expected to start for France in their friendly against Portugal.
