Peterborough United vs Tottenham Hotspur XI: Match Preview

Pre-Season preparations continue on Saturday afternoon as Mauricio Pochettino sends a ‘Tottenham XI’ to face League One Side Peterborough United.

It will be the third and final game for the “second-string side” before a squad is finalised for the trip to the United States, where the likes of Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen are expected to return to action.

Despite being advertised as a weakened team, fans in attendance can expect to see some first teamers, after Nabil Bentalab, Roberto Soldado and new signing Kieran Trippier were amongst those who featured in wins for ‘the XI’ against Southend and Rangers earlier this month.

Pochettino and co may also see the fixture as an ideal time to give Toby Alderweireld his first run-out in a Spurs shirt, after the defender completed a move from Southampton at the end of last week.

For Peterborough, it will be the League One side’s second match against Premier League opposition in as many weeks, after they came back from two goals down to salvage a 3-3 draw against West Ham last Saturday.

The London Road team finished ninth in League One last season, and are now managed by Dave Robertson following the mid-season departure of Darren Ferguson after four years at the club.

Unsurprisingly, competitive meetings between the sides are few and far between, with Tottenham unbeaten in the four encounters between the teams to date.

The most recent match-up came five years ago in the FA Cup, which Spurs won 4-0 thanks to a Niko Kranjcar double and one goal each from Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe.

Tottenham Hotspur legend Les Ferdinand’s cousin – Kane – plays in centre-midfield for the hosts, and is likely to feature on Saturday.
