- Spurs held to 1-1 draw vs Leeds United
Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United in the Premier League as their two-game winning run was halted.
In what turned out to be an entertaining game of football, Roberto De Zerbi’s side picked up another valuable point as they continue to steer clear of the relegation zone.
Mathys Tel and Dominic Calvert-Lewin got their names on the scoresheet, but the game emerged as a big talking point in terms of refereeing decisions.
Jarred Gillet was the referee, while Craig Pawson was tasked with VAR duties.
And it’s safe to say Micky van de Ven wasn’t happy with the latter, as seen from his reaction after the game.
Van de Ven fumes at officials
Over the course of the game, Van de Ven was seen chirping at the referee a handful of times, particularly in the second half.
He was tugged by a Leeds United defender and hit the ground, after which he took the ball in his hand as he believed he was fouled.
However, a handball was given against Tottenham, much to the anguish of the Dutchman.
And late in the game, James Maddison went down inside the penalty area after a challenge from Felix Nmecha.
Gillet waved play on and gave Tottenham a corner, once again to their bemusement. And Pawson, as the VAR, didn’t feel like there was a clear and obvious error from Gillett to give the home side a penalty, so the game went on.
After the game, an angry Van de Ven was spotted confronting the officials as he shook their hands reluctantly and appeared to have a go at them.
His reaction was clearly spotted during the telecast and the ones at the ground, which sent a pointed message to the state of refereeing against Tottenham.
Tottenham right to feel hard done by
After the game, Michael Owen claimed that Tottenham should have had a penalty as Maddison was indeed fouled by Nmecha.
Paul Robinson was also in agreement, as the Leeds attacker only got a slight touch on the ball but sent Maddison to the floor with his challenge.
Earlier, we wrote on Read Tottenham that referee Rob Jones cost Tottenham the game with his poor officiating against Sunderland.
Gillet’s error wasn’t that obvious, but it goes without saying that the North London outfit have been on the wrong end of some unfortunate refereeing decisions.
And if it eventually leads to relegation, Tottenham fans across the world will undoubtedly feel hard done by.
