At a glance:
- Romero went bonkers after Tel’s stunner
- Tottenham captain won’t feature this season
- Romero could leave in the summer
Cristian Romero is currently out injured with an MCL injury, but has been with the Tottenham squad in recent weeks as they aim to avoid relegation.
The Argentine suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 defeat against Sunderland after he was pushed onto Antonin Kinsky by Brian Brobbey.
He hasn’t featured since but should recover on time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Romero was with the rest of the injured Tottenham players in North London, and his reaction to Mathys Tel’s opening goal shows just how much he cares about the club.
Romero pushes Tottenham coaching staff down
Tottenham played quite well in the first half but couldn’t find a breakthrough.
And just when it looked like they would need something special to break the deadlock, Tel produced a moment of magic.
As the ball reached him just outside the box, the Frenchman took a fantastic first touch and side-footed a curling effort into the back of the net past the despairing dive of Karl Darlow.
The Tottenham players looked ecstatic as they seemed to be heading towards another victory that would have taken them four points clear of the relegation zone.
And Romero, who was wearing a white hoodie, jumped off his seat and pushed a member of the Tottenham coaching staff down as he celebrated with the rest of the squad.
Romero likely to leave Tottenham
Romero has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in the upcoming summer transfer window.
He has been a fantastic servant for the club since joining from Atalanta, but the current season has proved to be a tough one for him.
The Argentine defender hasn’t been at his best on the pitch and has also been vocal about the failings of the club’s hierarchy, which hasn’t gone down well with the top brass.

De Zerbi’s arrival could change things, and time will tell if both parties decide to carry on in the same vein.
However, a mutual separation is the likely solution for everyone involved.
Regardless of what happens, Romero will be remembered fondly for his spell at the club. He always wore his heart on his sleeve and was Tottenham’s Player of the Tournament when they won the UEFA Europa League last season.
We don’t know what the future holds, but in the meantime, get well soon, Cuti!
