At a glance:
- Pochettino open to Tottenham return
- Argentine currently with USMNT
- Poch has unfinished business with Spurs
After Thomas Frank’s sacking, speculation surrounding Mauricio Pochettino’s future dominated the back pages as Tottenham remained on the lookout for a manager.
After evaluating their options, they turned to Igor Tudor, which was viewed as a strange decision at the time.
And the Croatian lasted just 44 days in the job before leaving by mutual consent. The North London club were back to square one and repeated the process.
This time, Pochettino was heavily linked with a Tottenham return, but they opted to give the job to Roberto De Zerbi on a five-year deal.
And now, after everything that’s happened, the Argentine has had his say on whether or not he is still open to a Tottenham return.
Pochettino has unfinished business at Tottenham
Pochettino is currently with the USMNT and is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
When he was linked with a return to North London before De Zerbi’s arrival, there was a point where it looked like the stars would align.
Tottenham fans spotted Pochettino on a plane and urged him to come back, to which he just remained composed as ever.
And now, the Argentine believes he has unfinished business at Tottenham, adding that he would be open to a return at some point in the future.
“Yes, why not [go back]?” Pochettino told FourFourTwo in an exclusive interview.
“If the right conditions are there, of course. Tottenham feels like home to us. We identify with the club’s idiosyncrasies, values and supporters. Right now, it’s about enjoying the World Cup.
“After that, I’ve always said I came so close to winning the Premier League and Champions League, and I want to try again. I’d like to be part of a project with the ambition of winning both.”
Ship may have sailed for Poch
De Zerbi put pen to paper on a five-year deal without a relegation clause, so he’s here for the long haul.
Even otherwise, Pochettino’s career since leaving Tottenham has been a mixed bag, to say the least.
He managed PSG and Chelsea before joining the United States national team and is set to remain there at least until the end of the FIFA World Cup.
Pochettino’s stint will always be looked back on fondly as he gave the Tottenham supporters joy and belief they’d never seen before.
However, the ship may have sailed in terms of a reunion, at least for the time being.
