Arsenal could be the reason why Tottenham avoid relegation from the Premier League

At a glance:

  • Tottenham are 18th in Premier League
  • They are dependent on other teams for safety
  • Spurs need Arsenal to do them a favor

In a strange turn of fate, Tottenham Hotspur must look at their arch-rivals, Arsenal, to help them avoid relegation this season.

The North London side is currently in a relegation battle, sitting in 18th place in the Premier League, with five games remaining.

They are two points behind West Ham United in 17th and five behind Nottingham Forest in 16th.

Tottenham first need to win at least three of their remaining five games. It would be a big feat, considering they haven’t won a single Premier League game since December 28. However, they also need a favor from their arch-rivals.

Tottenham hope Arsenal can help them in relegation battle

Spurs played out a 2-2 draw against Brighton at home last weekend. West Ham, meanwhile, played out a goalless draw against Crystal Palace on Monday.

Hence, the two teams remain separated by just two points in the relegation battle.

Both sides have five games remaining and arguably have a similar strength of fixtures. One of West Ham’s games, meanwhile, is against Arsenal. They will face the Gunners at the London Stadium on May 10.

Now, Arsenal are also involved in a thrilling title race with Manchester City. After their defeat against the Cityzens at the Etihad, they lead them by three points.

However, City have a game in hand, and if they win their remaining games, they could potentially win the title on goal difference.

Hence, Arsenal must maintain a perfect record in their remaining five games.

This would be a big boost for Tottenham, who will hope the Gunners can beat West Ham in their clash. This could end up being the difference between Spurs staying in the Premier League or getting relegated.

A look at Tottenham and West Ham’s remaining fixtures

Both sides have a relatively mixed bag of fixtures remaining in the Premier League. West Ham have Everton (H), Brentford (A), Arsenal (H), Newcastle (A), and Leeds United (H). Meanwhile, Tottenham have Wolves (A), Aston Villa (A), Leeds (H), Chelsea (A), and Everton (H).

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest are also still in the mix, despite being five points above Spurs. They have Sunderland (A), Chelsea (A), Newcastle (H), Manchester United (A), and Bournemouth (H). They also have two games against Aston Villa in the Europa League semi-finals.

On paper, West Ham appear to have slightly better fixtures, especially with three home games. That would make the Arsenal game even more crucial.

Tottenham fans will hope the Gunners can overcome the Hammers’ home advantage on the day. While this could potentially lead to Arsenal winning the title, it’s vital Spurs avoid relegation at all costs.

The relegation battle is set to go right down to the wire, just like the Premier League title race.

The ideal scenario for Tottenham would be avoiding relegation and Arsenal failing to win the league. However, if given a choice, avoiding relegation will obviously be the priority.
