Tottenham have had three coaches this season, with two permanent ones and one interim. They have had more coaches than home wins this season.
In fact, Spurs’ last Premier League win came under Thomas Frank, as they beat Crystal Palace 1-0 on December 28. They have since gone 14 games without a win, with Frank managing nine of them, Igor Tudor managing five, and Roberto De Zerbi one.
A lot of things have gone wrong for Tottenham this season, which sees them in the relegation zone. However, much of it comes down to the incompetent decision-making from the club’s hierarchy and poor recruitment.
Boyhood Tottenham fan Matt Wells stars in MLS
It was clear in November last year that Frank wasn’t going to work at Tottenham. The performances and results were both deteriorating. However, the club’s board held on to him despite the fans chanting for his sacking.

Amidst this, Spurs saw Frank’s assistant coach, Matt Wells, leave the club and join the Colorado Rapids as the head coach. The Englishman has had a terrific start with the MLS side as well. He has managed four wins and three defeats in seven games.
However, Wells has already been able to show clear ideas and principles in a short amount of time. One of his focuses has been on the attacking side of things, urging his team to play dominant and front-footed football. As a result, he has also broken a record with the MLS side.
Wells has helped the Colorado Rapids record the most goals scored (19) in the first seven games of a head coach’s tenure in the club’s history. The previous record was set at 15 in 2019. His team has recorded some big wins, like 6-2 over the Houston Dynamo and 4-1 over the LA Galaxy and Sporting KC.
On the other hand, Tottenham have massively struggled in attack this season, with just 40 goals in 32 Premier League games. They have scored just five goals in their last eight league games.
Tottenham could have held on to Wells
One of the biggest reasons for Tottenham being in the relegation zone is the delay in sacking Frank. He eventually went in February, but should have been sacked in November itself. This would have given the club plenty of time to choose the right replacement as well.
Wells is a proper Tottenham man and is the grandson of Spurs’ double-winning winger, Cliff Jones. He understands the ethos and playing style of the club to the fullest. He also has a great relationship with the players, having been the assistant coach for two years under Ange Postecoglou.
Someone like Wells would have been a perfect choice as an interim manager for Tottenham after Frank’s sacking. He would have instilled simple, attacking football, while also giving the players the confidence they needed. He is also an excellent coach and not just a man manager.

Instead, Tottenham signed Tudor, who managed zero wins in five league games. He also often chose different formations and players, leading to more poor performances.
It is just another huge addition in a list of mistakes for chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange. It appears it will have a catastrophic result as well.
