It went from jubilation to agony for Tottenham Hotspur against Crystal Palace in the first half as they went into the interval 3-1 down despite taking the lead.
Ismaila Sarr had the ball in the back of the net, but after a lengthy VAR check, his nose (yes, his nose) was adjudged to have been offside as the goal was chalked off.
Two minutes later, Dominic Solanke broke the deadlock with a close-range finish as the rub of the green seemed to be going Igor Tudor’s way.
However, things quickly went south as two goals from Sarr sandwiched between a Jorgen Strand Larsen effort gave Oliver Glasner’s side a two-goal advantage at the halfway mark.
Micky van de Ven conceded a penalty and was sent off for bringing Sarr down inside the box.
But he wasn’t the Tottenham player who was booed, with Guglielmo Vicario emerging as the home fans’ victim.
Tottenham fans make feelings clear on Guglielmo Vicario
Ahead of the game, there were unconfirmed reports on social media that Antonin Kinsky would get a chance between the sticks for Tottenham.
However, Vicario kept his place in goal and it’s safe to say he didn’t enjoy a good 45 minutes.
He made a save in the first minute to deny Adam Wharton, but things quickly went downhill for Tottenham as the game went on despite scoring first.
Sarr sent him the wrong way for the penalty, while for the second goal, Strand Larsen put the ball through his legs from close range to give his side the lead.
For the third goal, Joao Palhinha and Pedro Porro both failed to clear the ball, allowing Sarr to toe-poke the ball home from close range.
However, Vicario was a little slow to leave his goal line and when he did, he got nowhere close to the ball as Palace extended their advantage to two goals.
Sky Sports‘ Peter Smith, who is at the stadium, said: “Vicario is being booed by the Spurs fans. Again.”
Tottenham fans storm out in large numbers at halftime
After Sarr made it 3-1, there was stunned silence at the stadium as the home fans went into a state of shock.
Moments later, Tottenham fans were spotted leaving their seats in large numbers. And while it could be argued that they could have just left their seats to get some refreshments at half-time, telecast footage showed a lot of fans outside the stadium, which is a clear sign that they had no intention of returning.
Sky Sports News’ Gary Cotterill, who is reporting live from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, said: “Spurs fans streaming out. And I don’t think they are all joining the burger queue.”
Tottenham are well and truly up against it as the prospect of relegation looms large at N17.
